Ancestral Dreaming: A Portrait to Venerate

  • Virtual Zoom Temple (map)

Dreamers are invited to embark on a four-week liminal journey to connect, remember, and honor Ancestor. In everyday terms, an ancestor might refer to a deceased blood relative or someone no longer living in the current time-space continuum. The word itself originates from the Latin antecessor meaning "predecessor" or "fore-goer." The prefix antes means "before," and Cēdō," to go." We may then wonder, before what? Preceding whom? Many Indigenous peoples and earth-centered cultures would argue that while our predecessors may not be physically present, they are still living through and accompanying us. Our bodies are made of of Ancestor. Furthermore, we may explore Ancestor as relating to place, land, culture, language, and mystery.

During this four-week journey, we will engage with practices to honor and connect with Ancestor while welcoming the liminal realms of dreaming, rest, and creativity. We will celebrate the ancestors we carry within us, those we miss and yearn for, and perhaps the ancestors who have been forgotten or displaced. Our community will facilitate one of the most ancient practices of connecting with ancestors: witnessing, listening, and seeing together. Communally, we will weave stories, songs, dreams, memories, prayers, and intuitive wisdom to create a portrait to venerate.
